Explosion of coronavirus related depression in France
At the end of the first French lockdown, one in seven people presented with a depressive syndrome, according to a study published Friday by the statistical service of social ministries, which highlights a greater vulnerability of women and young people. “In May 2020, 13.5 % of people aged 15 or over declared symptoms suggestive of a depressive state”, against 10.9% in 2019, indicates the Directorate of research, studies, evaluation and statistics.
Young people are the most affected with 22% of 15-24 year olds, which is double the number of 2019. The increase in depressive states is also stronger among women, 15.8% in 2020, against 12.5% the year previous. These depressive states include loss of interest in doing things, depressed mood, sleeping problems, and difficulty concentrating.
