Italy: BA.5 at >60% of SARS-CoV-2 sequences

The proportion of BA.5 increased from 23.74%, in week 23, 2022, to 60.71% in week 25, 2022. At the same time, the proportion of BA.2 decreased from 58.14% to 17.86%.

  • The Omicron variant is the only variant of SARS-CoV-2 circulating in our country (Italy).
  • In the period May 14, 2022 – June 27, 2022, this system also confirms the prevalence of cases of Omicron variant infection in Italy, mainly attributable to autochthonous transmission, in all age groups.
  • The prevalence of cases due to Omicron variant infection is observed in all age groups.
  • The growing trend of BA.5 and a decrease in sequencing attributable to BA.2 are confirmed.
