Brazil: 2 cases of XQ Omicron recombinant reported

Two cases of the subvariant of Covid-19 called Omicron XQ were registered in São Paulo this Thursday, 5th May 2022. These are the first diagnoses of this version of the strain in Brazil.

Omicron XQ is the combination of sublineages BA.1.1 and BA.2 of the Omicron variant.

The sequencing of the XQ samples was performed by the Butantan Institute. The secretariat did not disclose the age of the patients or the state of health of the two. The international system for classifying and registering new strains, known as Pango, has identified at least 59 cases of the XQ omicron in England, which accounts for 98% of cases, and in Wales, which accounts for 2%.
