France: Deaths up 12% in one week as BA.5 increases its share

All the Covid indicators in France are currently heading in the wrong direction as BA.5 continues to increase its share of sequences. The incidence rate has doubled, hospitalizations and deaths are increasing, and the positivity rate in excess of 30%. The reinfection rate has reached 12%.

In week 26, the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 intensified in mainland France, new hospitalizations as well as deaths were up sharply, mainly affecting the oldest, insufficiently vaccinated.

  • Incidence rate still increasing in all regions and above 1% (1,000/100,000) in the majority of them
  • Number of new hospitalizations, intensive care admissions and deaths on the rise
  • Continued increase in the proportion of the majority Omicron BA.5 sub-lineage in the Flash S25 survey (06/20)
  • Increase in the proportion of reinfections since December 2021, reaching 12% in S23-2022

These are pretty awful figures, but all credit to the French government for continuing to publish them rather than sticking their head in the sand.


Covid-19 case levels in France are now close to the second-highest ever peak in infections seen in March 2022, and may surpass it in the next few days
