Delta vaccine breakthrough cases in Washington State quadruple in two weeks

This week’s update from Washington State showing vaccine breakthrough cases and which Sars-CoV-2 variant is causing them up to 18th August 2021.  The Delta variant is responsible for a big increase in vaccine breakthrough cases reported by Washington State this week. Verified Delta breakthrough cases are up by 219 on last week, but there is real cause for concern for cases with variants that have not been identified by the state – they have increased by 676 in a week!

We are guessing that the 676 breakthrough cases with an unidentified variant are mostly Delta cases. We think that Washington State are now seeing so many vaccine breakthrough cases that they are simply unable to sequence them all in one week.  At least we hope that’s the explanation, because the alternative is that there are unknown Sars-CoV-2 variants in Washington State that are causing far more breakthrough cases than even the Delta variant.

If the unidentified breakthrough cases are mostly Delta, that means the Delta vaccine breakthrough rate has almost quadrupled in 2 weeks.

On the 4th August, there were 405 verified Delta breakthrough cases.

On the 11th August, there were 629 verified Delta breakthrough cases plus perhaps 30 unverified, a total of 659, an increase from the previous week of ~64%.

On the 18th August, there were 848 verified Delta breakthrough cases plus perhaps 710 unverified, a total of 1558, an increase from the previous week of ~150%

USA: 55% increase in Delta vaccine breakthrough cases in Washington State

This week’s update from Washington State showing vaccine breakthrough cases and which Sars-CoV-2 variant is causing them up to 11th August 2021. Of note this week is another big jump for Delta B.1.617.2 vaccine breakthrough cases, which have increased by 55% from 405 to 629 in one week.  There is also a sudden and rather alarming 74% increase in vaccine breakthrough cases where the Sars-CoV-2 variant is defined as “other”.

Belgium: 90-year-old woman coinfection with Alpha and Beta coronavirus variants

Researchers in Belgium report on the case of a 90-year-old woman who was simultaneously infected with two different variants of concern (VOCs) of COVID-19, in a Case Report being presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) held online this year.

On March 3 2021, the woman, whose medical history was unremarkable, was admitted to the OLV Hospital in the Belgian city of Aalst after a spate of falls. She tested positive for COVID-19 on the same day. She lived alone and received nursing care at home, and had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Initially, there were no signs of respiratory distress and the patient had good oxygen saturation. However, she developed rapidly worsening respiratory symptoms, and died five days later.

When the patient’s respiratory sample was tested for VOCs with PCR, they discovered that she had been infected by two different strains of the virus–one which originated in the UK, known as B.1.1.7 (Alpha), and another that was first detected in South Africa (B.1.351; Beta).

The presence of both strains was confirmed by PCR on a second respiratory sample, by sequencing of the S-gene and by whole genome sequencing.

Preprint: The emergence of Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus variant Lambda C.37 in South America

We report the emergence of a novel lineage of SARS-CoV-2 in South America, termed C.37. It presents seven nonsynonymous mutations in the Spike gene (Δ247-253, G75V, T76I, L452Q, F490S, T859N) and a deletion in the ORF1a gene (Δ3675-3677) also found in variants of concern (VOCs) Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. Initially reported in Lima, Peru, in late December 2020, it now accounts for 97% of Peruvian public genomes in April 2021. It is expanding in Chile and Argentina, and there is evidence of onward transmission in Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, the USA, Germany, and Israel. On June 15, 2021, the World Health Organization designated C.37 as Variant of Interest (VOI) Lambda.

Uganda goes into total lockdown as #coronavirus infections rise

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Friday tightened restrictions in the country following a worrying rise in Covid-19 infections and deaths.

On a day when the country recorded 42 Covid-related deaths and 1,000 new infections, the Ugandan leader stopped the movement of public and private transport vehicles. Only security, emergency and other essential service providers, including the police, firefighters and the military have been exempted.

The new move tightened restrictions imposed a week ago, when cross-district travel was banned, schools closed and other public gatherings restricted yet the deaths continued to rise.

At the Mulago National Referral Hospital in the capital Kampala, a ‘technical fault’ on Wednesday cut off oxygen supply to Covid-19 patients at the facility, leading to the death of several patients. The new highest death toll would arrive two days later when the country reported 42 deaths, raising the number of those killed by the virus to more than 400.

WHO announce new names for Sars-CoV-2 #coronavirus variants

The WHO have announced new names for the confusingly named sars-cov-2 variants. The new names are based on the Greek alphabet.

Variants of Concern = Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta

Variants of Interest = Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa

WHO introduces new naming system for Sars-CoV-2 variants based on Greek alphabet –  Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa etc
